March Member of the Month

March AOM - Racquel Yip

Congratulations to our member of the month, Racquel Yip!!!

Racquel started her CrossFit experience with us only 6 short months ago, but you wouldn’t know that by seeing her in class. Racquel is a natural athlete, and has made amazing progress since joining us. She has been improving her form on complex movements, as well as competing in the CrossFit Open in her first year, where she finished all workouts Rx. Her hard work has been paying off. and it shows in her most recent first place podium finish at the local Rookie Rumble competition. Racquel’s upbeat and engaging personality has earned her many new friends at the gym and her positive attitude and energy is what we love about her and all of our members. We look forward to seeing her continued progress as we get the chance to work with her to improve her skills and workout with her on regular basis.

Below are a few fun facts about Racquel that you might not know.

What are your favorite movements?

Rowing and front squats, but any movements where I get to use my legs are great. Light kettle bell swings are also a favorite.

What is your least favorite movement?

Burpees! I can throw myself on the ground, but convincing myself not to take a nap down there is a struggle!

How did you get into CrossFit and how long have you been training?

I saw the CrossFit Games on TV and thought, “It would be cool if I could do that!” My friend overheard me and showed me a video of Shaunna Como and told me about CrossFit Vae Victis, and I was sold on giving it a shot. I never thought that I would love it as much as I do though.

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit?

I love the nervous feeling  when I look at the WOD, and try to prepare my mind and body for whatever Pat has in store. I love pushing myself to do things that seem completely impossible. I love the feeling of laying on the floor after the workout is finished, gasping for air, laying in a pile of sweat knowing that I just got a little bit faster, or a little bit stronger, or at least I didn’t die. I love the atmosphere and the community of everyone pushing each other to push their bodies past the point of their mind giving up. I love everything really except burpees!

What do you like most about CrossFit Vae Victis?

By far the people! I’ve never been surrounded by so many people who genuinely want the best for those around them. There is always someone around to ask for help about anything inside and outside of the gym. Everyone comes out and supports each other. I’ve made some amazing friends that I can’t imagine living without. It’s like being a part of a big family!

Favorite cheat food?

Chocolate cake, donuts, ice cream…anything sweet….and wine, lots of wine!

Tell us one interesting fact about you others may not know.

Before CrossFit, I was a huge girly girl (sorority girl, cheerleader, makeup obsessed) I wouldn’t try new things and I was terrified to fail. Now trying things out of my comfort zone and failing are daily events.

Name one goal or personal record you want to achieve in the next year?

I want to get a ring muscle-up and handstand walk. Overall, I want to get faster and stronger. I want to learn all I can about the sport and keep having fun with my Vae Victis crew.

Once again, congratulations go out to Racquel for impressing all of us with her personality and can do attitude. That is what it means to be the  rossFit Vae Victis Member of the Month. Check back next month for April’s Member of the Month. We will once again be highlighting one of our great members that is killing it in the box.
